Why you’re seeing this error on your submissions
You may see this error if there’s a mismatch between the contractor details in BrightCIS and HMRC’s records. Work through the checks below in order:
- Match the legal name
Check that the contractor’s legal name in BrightCIS exactly matches HMRC’s records, including “Ltd” vs “Limited”, punctuation, and spaces. - Check the UTR
Make sure the Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is 10 digits long and has been entered correctly. - Confirm HMRC verification
Ensure the contractor has been verified with HMRC. In BrightCIS, go to Submissions > Verification Requests to check the verification status. - Newly registered contractors
If the contractor has only recently registered with HMRC, wait 24–48 hours for HMRC’s records to update before you resubmit. - If the error still appears
Click Details on the submission to view the full HMRC response code, then contact BrightCIS Support with that code for further assistance.
